Here's my chance to become a champion..."
Alexis Arguello
vs.
Andrew Ganigan
Alexis Arguello once again proved his mettle as a world champion, as he retained his WBC lightweight title with a fifth round K.O. over number one contender Andrew Ganigan of Hawaii.
...Ganigan attempted to make the most of his southpaw strategy, and in the first round, he managed to confuse the champion and send him to the canvas with two left hooks. (This was only the fourth time Arguello have ever been knocked down in 75 fights.)
...Arguello came out strong in the second..and had Ganigan on the defensive for most of the session...
...Ganigan came out battling in the third round and dealt Arguello a left to the midsection that buckled the champion's knees. But Arguello came right back, and staggered the contender..
The fourth round was all out war...
..the fifth...The Champion backed Ganigan into his own corner and dealt him a lethel sequence of punches..
Ganigan hit the deck with a thud, and Referee Carlos Padilla began the 10 count, which was still going on as the bell sounded. The official count ended nine seconds after the end of the round.
While Arguello basked in the joys of his victory...Ganigan, visibly depressed ..."I was confident...I caught him moving back in the first round, and when he went down, I thought "Here's a chance for me to become a champion!"
But he got up....(1)
