Baer's Last Stand

"Max Baer made his last stand in his "comeback", one that will be remembered as the best fight of his checkered career. The once great Livermore heavyweight, who at one time was hailed as a second Jim Jeffries, went out to atone for the heartaches and headaches he had given his suppoters in the past, and he made good with a vengence even though he was stopped by Lou Nova at the Yankee Stadium in eleven rounds. Baer was a throughly beaten gladiator when referee Frank Fullam halted the contest, but to be stopped after absorbing the punishment meted out to him was no disgrace."

-Nat Fleischer. The Ring (1)

Ironically, Baer after four more fights, all ending in knockout victories, was to end his career losing yet again to Lou Nova on April 4, 1941.
