Joe Beckett Wins In Battle With Frank Moran
Joe Beckett, England's heavyweight champion was awarded the decision over Frank Moran, Pittsburgh, last night.
The referee stopped the fight in the seventh round to save Moran further punishment.
Moran's famous Mary Ann failed to function.
Odds were on Beckett when it became known that Moran was taking his training seriously.
-Nashville Tennessean. October 13, 1922
Perhaps the odds were affected by an article the previous May from Albany, New York:
MORAN, FIGHTER IS NABBED WITH BOOZE
Frank Moran, well known heavyweight boxer, was released under $10,000 bail here today after being arrested for bootlegging. Moran, in company with Edward Zuppe, was arrested in Mechansville. The had eight flour sacks containing 160 bottles of "Scotch whisky" in the back of a car, dry agents said. The whisky and the machine were confiscated by federal authorities.
March 1, 1922
Moran had knocked Beckett out in the second round two years previous.
