Upset!
James J. Braddock
vs.
Gerald Ambrose (Tuffy) Griffiths
30 November 1928
Like a mounting winter storm, Tuffy Griffiths had moved out of the West toward The Big Apple and The Big Time. Conqueror of fifty-four opponents in a row, the hard rushing Griffiths was being billed as the next Dempsey.
Griffiths' New York debut was more to be a sacrifical ritual than a fight, with the one chosen to be thrown to the Lion being Pete Latzo, highly regarded former champion. But something happened to Pete on his way to the Garden, journeyman Jimmy Braddock broke Latzo's jaw in four places during Pete's "tune-up" match for the big Griffiths bout.
Left with no choice but to match the lightly regarded Braddock with the winner by foregone conclusion Griffiths, Tex Ricard made the match.
Round one went much as expected, the on-rushing Griffiths pounding away at the over-matched Braddock.
Then came round two...
as Griffiths rushed in Braddock connected solidly with a right to the jaw...down went Griffiths...
reeling he was up at three...
Braddock re-loaded and blasted another right to Tuffy's jaw...
down again and up again, this time at a count of four.
The staggering Griffiths stepped once more into range,
and once more the sledgehammer right pounded him to the canvas...
trying to rise again at the count of three...
Griffiths fell back ,
and as pictured above Referee McPartland stepped between the victor and the vanquished. And in a foretelling of what was to come Jimmy Braddock a 7-1 underdog at upset the experts.
