PELKEY'S BLOW TO HEART IS FATAL TO LUTHER MCCARTY
LUTHER MCCARTY DIES OF HEART FAILURE IN BOUT
Physicians Say Champion Suffered From Vavular Heart Trouble, Aggravated by Cold Reception From Spectators...
A short right hook landing just below the heart staggered the champion, and he fell to the canvas, dying less than thirty minutes later.
Chaos reigned in the big arena for a few minutes. Even while McCarty was breathing the cry got around that he was dead and there was a fierce scramble for the exits when the boxer was carried out.
Pelkey, Tommy Burns, and the other seconds, slipped out of the arena, entered Burns' car, and were driven to Pelkey's headquarters where clothes were changed and the party prepared to go to Burns' home.
The authorities place Pelkey under arrest and he is being held pending the action of the coroner's jury. According to physicians at ringside the death was due to heart trouble.
The inquest will not be held until Monday. Pelkey was admitted to bail tonight, bond being furnished by Tommy Burns.
McCarthy's body had barely grown cold when theatrical men from the United States, began making Pelkey offers to go on stage. Within five hours after he had become world's heavyweight champion, Pelkey had received no less than five offers. He refused all, however.

The corner's jury ruled that Luther McCarty died as a result of heart problems. (In fact, McCarty most likely died from a cerebral hemorrhage induced by a fall from a horse some days previous to the fight. )
