Ernie Schaaf went down from a combination of punches in the thirteenth round, carried from the ring on a stretcher, Ernie Schaaf died five days later. An autopsy revealed that Schaaf had died as the result of blood clot on his brain which had developed as result of his previous fight with Max Baer.
