Manhasset, Long Island, New York

When Georges Carpentier made his first tour of the United States in 1920 James Curley was the man who organized the series of exhibition bouts. Curley, famed for his promotion of the Johnson vs. Willard bout, also was the promoter of Carpentier's bout with Battling Levinsky.

Naturally when Carpentier prepared to return to the United States to train for his heavyweight championship fight with Dempsey he called again on his friend, Jim Curley. Curley arranged for the house at Manhasset, Long Island that was to be Carpentier's training camp.

On this day, Long Island neighbor and former heavyweight champion James Corbett came to call. This would be one the very few times the press or anyone for that matter would gain entry to Carpentier's very closed camp. The French Champion trained in secret on grounds patrolled by guards, many said he worked on a "mystery punch" some said it was the developement of the "Evil Eye" that he practiced.
