Eugene Criqui
Circa 1923
Former French Flyweight Champion, Eugene Criqui, lost his title on the eve of World War I, in fact it was his last ring appearance before entering the service. During the War ,Criqui was seriously wounded by bullet fragments that struck the left side of his face. His jaw was re-built using wire and a steel plate, leading to the rumor that Criqui's "iron jaw" made him imprevious to a knockout.
In his American ring debut, 2 June 1923, Eugene Criqui met an aging Johnny Kilbane, more than a decade the champion. Criqui knocked Kilbane out in the sixth round becoming the Featherweight Champion of the World.
Eugene Criqui's reign was to prove to be short-lived. Fifty-four days after winning the title Criqui lost a fifteen round decision to Johnny Dundee and with it the championship.
