War!

Paddy DeMarco

vs.

Jimmy Carter

II

The Cow Palace

San Francisco

17 November 1954

Following Carter's lackluster performance in losing the title to DeMarco the previous March and in light of recent boxing events, in particular the Gavilan-Saxton disgrace. (Palermo managed fighther Saxton had won what appeared to all the world a fradulant decision and thereby Kid Gavilan's crown.) The re-match was under heavy scrutiny. From the opening gong there was no doubt this was war! For the first five rounds DeMarco more than held is own, but gradually Carter's unrelenting body attack took it's toll.

Come round nine DeMarco went down for only the second time in his career.

Round fourteen ended with DeMarco down again and being literally dragged to his corner by his seconds.

As DeMarco came out for round fifteen he wobbled forward and mercifully the referee stepped in.

The official time 14 seconds of the fifteenth round.

James Carter was the first man ever to hold the same title three times! And although DeMarco had a black eye, he and Jimmy Carter gone along way to relieve the sport of it's black eye.
