Dempsey Given Ovation At Park

Boxes Four Rounds With Jules Rioux at St. Luke's Lyceum Picnic

"Jack Dempsey, world's heavyweight champion, gave a four round exhibition with Jules Rioux, the big Canadian lumberjack, at Brandywine Park Saturday night as the special feature of the St. Luke's Lyceum field day. Floyd Johnson who was advertised to appear in the ring failed to show himself. Rioux is one of Dempsey's sparring partners and served as a fine punching bag for the champion who mauled "the Canadian all over the ring."

The champion arrived at the park about 8:45 o'clock...He was given a splendid ovation by the crowd of little more than 1,000 who turned out to see him box. The champion wore lavender tights. His lusterous black hair and dark tanned skin, the result of much activity in the sun, made quite a contrast."

'If his appearance is not deceiving, the champion is in good condition for his fight with Luis Firpo on September 14....He is bronzed and the picture of health. His smile radiated good-naturedly over the crowd on hand to see him in the exhibition. He was the center of an admiring group from the time he reached Schenectady until he left for Saratoga where he appeared in another exhibition show. Jack McAuliffe, retired undefeated lightweight champion referred the exhibition. "

"Nick Dominick's boy staged an interesting battle royal that had the fans in an uproar. It is a good act and a fine bit of entertainment."
