Finally
After a wait of over an hour, more than half of that in the ring, Dempsey meets to shake hands with Tommy Gibbons. The source of much of delay stands to the center of the two combatants, Referee Jimmy Doughtery "The Baron of Leiperville". Doughtery, Jack Kearns' hand picked referee and long-time friend of Dempsey had refused to enter the ring without payment in advance of his promised $5,000 fee. By most accounts, Kearns himself made good on the payment. Doc Kearns is noticably absent from this pre-fight introduction, being occupied at the ticket booth with United States Revenue agents counting the gate. Kearns had agreed to take over the gate in lieu a promised final $100,000 payment from promoters.
Dempsey, Jimmy Doughtery, Gibbons, Ed Kane (Gibbons' manager) and Jimmy Delaney (A Gibbons' sparring partner).
