Dempsey vs. Gibbons

July 4, 1923

Shelby, Montana

Challenger Gibbons lands a left jab as the always on-rushing Dempsey coils to respond. Referee James Daugherty can be seen circling in the background. The start of the bout had been delayed nearing an hour when referee Daugherty refused to enter the ring. He had been guaranteed $5,000 and had not been paid. After his one hour hold out Daugherty was paid. As it turned out, he and Dempsey were the only one's to receive any money from the Rape of Shelby.

Dempsey crowded and pushed the boxer Gibbons and clearly won the decision but showed obvious frustration at being unable to knock out the Challenger. As frustration shared by the sparse crowd that filled the ring with bottles and seat cushions at the end of the fight.
