In the blazing mid-afternoon sun, over an hour behind schedule Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons square-off at ring center. As Dempsey prepares to do battle in the ring, the absent Doc Kearns continues the rear guard action at the ticket booth to protect the gate proceeds.

Serving as Dempsey's second to his left and rear is Joe Benjamin, the Champion's "running mate", center Baron Doughtery, the referee. To Tommy Gibbons' right and rear is his trainer Pape and Bud Gorman.
