Fifth round action, Referee Jock O'Sullivan moves in to seperate the men. Sharkey was building a commanding lead by the end ot this round. In the six round Dempsey began in his own words,
" I started going for Sharkey's middle. I gave it to him pretty good and I could see right off he didn't like it. In the middle of the seventh I had hit him half a dozen times around the belt, he stepped back, dropped his hands, turned his head to Jock O'Sullivan, the ref and yelled , "Hey, he's hittin' me low!"
I hit him with one of the last good punches of my life. It was everything I could throw, I couldn't miss. His chin was sticking out there, unprotected. Sharkey went down and it was all over...
It was a real good touch: a crowd of 75,000 and a gross gate of $1,083,530, my fourth million dollar gate. I made half a million."1
