Jess Willard

v.

Jack Dempsey

July 4, 1919

Erroroneously marked in the negative "Dempsey KO's Willard". Dempsey is pictured awaiting Willard to assume his feet as Ollie Pecord begins the count. This was one of seven knockdowns in the first round. Willard endured the round being saved by the bell. He suffered a broken jaw, fractured eye socket, cracked ribs, the permanent loss of hearing in one ear, several teeth lost and numerous cuts and bruises. Through this all Willard managed to survive three more rounds before being unable to answer the bell for round number four.

A shocking outcome to a fight for which Willard demanded he be held harmless should he kill Jack Dempsey in the ring.
