Luis Angel Firpo

In what was without doubt a rare instance Luis Angel Firpo dons the big training gloves and strikes a pose for the camera. Firpo was notorious for his non-training, and his love of a dollar.

He rarely trained preferring to fight to stay in shape. As well as the fact that he much preferred being paid to fight rather than paying sparring partners to train.

Firpo's relations with the press were tenuous at best. He was loath to give interviews and when forced was given to single word answers. His pursuit of the dollar became so problematic that on several occasions while training for his fight with Dempsey, Tex Rickard had to visit Firpo's camp and ask him to lower the admission price he was charging.

But for all his rigidity outside the ring he was a true force of nature inside he was indeed
