Bob (Arum) promoted my fight against Rocky Sckorski in a small banquet room at Bally's in Las Vegas. They brought in a lot of additional chairs to handle the crowd. With all the chairs filled and much of the aisle space, the fire marshall began turning people away.
I knocked Rocky out in the third round, Bob jumped into the ring as if I'd won the title. Later he told me that the TV rating set a record for boxing shows. He said he wanted me to sign a three-fight deal.
"No."
But I did agree to fight Guido Trane, an Italian champ, in February. "You do this one for twenty-four thousand, " he said. "I'm going to move you up each time. The one after will be for a hundred thousand."
...I fought Trane, who figured to be my best test yet. He lasted five rounds. When I could see he was hurt and get more hurt, I asked him, "Are you okay?" I told the ref to stop the match.
