Kid Gavilan
vs.
Bobby Dykes
4 February 1952
Miami Stadium
Kid Gavilan, the disputed welterweight champion (recognized by the N.B.A. as world champion, by The Ring as American champion) was fast becoming the un-disputed king of the disputed division. This night, The Cuban Hawk, squeaked by the highly regarded twenty-two year old, Dykes. The margin of Gavilan's split decision victory was, depending on your particular point of view, either his second round knockdown of Dykes, or the fact that Judge Ladislad Nodarse of Havana, was the third judge. Judge Nodarse was brought in on the insistence of the Gavilan camp, who feared unfair treatment in the first "mixed" match in Florida history.
The cards read:
Referee Eddie Coachman 143-140 Dykes
Judge Mark Erwin of Miami 142-141 Gavilan
Judge Nodarse of Havana 145-139 Gavilan
