Rocky Graziano
v.
Charley Fusari
14 September 1949
It was almost two years since I beat Tony Zale in Chicago. I was thirty years old. My legs and my arms went back on me in the third Zale fight, when I lost the title, and I shouldn't kid myself. I am no longer the street fighter who took 'em all on and knocked 'em all cold.
"We'll win it back slow and easy," says Irving. In June I knocked out Bobby Claus in Wilmington, Delaware. In July I knocked out Joey Agosta up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Then in September I come back to New York as a fighter for the first time in four years. I fought this fast-coming young Fusari. For nine rounds Fusari run me ragged. I choked on my own wind and stumbled over my own feet and when the tenth come up my corner knew and I knew that I was losing the fight. The last round I prayed and punched and got strength I don't know from where, and for two minutes I felt like Rocky Graziano the old killer. For one little flash, I was suddenly years younger. It was enough to fold up Charley Fusari."
