At six feet tall and a mere 160 pounds, with his youthful look, Al Hostak was hardly an imposing figure in the ring. But with remarkable speed Al Hostak threw punches like cracking a whip.
In 1938, Seattle resident , Al Hostak was reaching his prime, a world class fighter. He had just one problem, in 1938 there was another Seattle native who was also a world class fighter, Champion Freddie Steele. On the 26th of July, 1938, with Jack Dempsey acting as referee and 30,000 screaming local fans looking on, Al Hostak met Freddie Steele for the middleweight championship of the world. The outcome, scrawny Al Hostak put Steele to the canvas four times on the way to a knockout at 1 minute 42 seconds of the first round.
