The Jewel of the Ghetto
Ruby Goldstein
Circa 1926
A wonderful vintage original Johnson Studio of San Francisco photograph of the pride of the Lower East Side, Ruby Goldstein. At his peak, Goldstein won his first twenty-three fights, thirteen by knockout. Then, came number twenty-four, in the form of Ace Hudkins. The fight started as so many of Goldstein's had ended with the sudden swiftness of Ruby's explosive right hand, and down, face first, went Hudkins. There the similarity to previous victories ended, up at the count of nine, Ace Hudkins had come to fight. Round four the un-thinkable happened ;Ruby Goldstein was knocked out. Ruby Goldstein, a mere boy of nineteen sat in his corner, tears streaming down his cheeks.
The Jewel was forever tarnished...
Although, Ruby Goldstein only lost 5 times in a professional career of 55 fights, he was cursed with a glass jaw and lacked the "killer instinct" to win the big ones.
But, for a time, however brief, he was the finest of his generation.
