Offered by Richard K. Fox, Representing The

Championship of the World

circa 1889

As the long hot summer of 1888 drew to a close John L. Sullivan's claim as Champion of the World was being drawn into question. Richard K. Fox, unquestionably the most influencial figure in sports at this time and John L.'s arch rival, had presented the "Diamond Belt" to one John Joseph Killion, known as Jake Kilrain. John L. had not had a good couple of years. In the Spring of 1887, Kilrain had posted $1,000 and had challenged John L. Sullivan chose instead to sail to Europe and in March of 1888, fought Charley Mitchell in a 39 round draw, that most observers felt was a disappointing showing for Sullivan. By August, 1888, Sullivan's iron constitution had given out. After years of hard drinking he lay near death, on one occasion a priest was called to administer last rites. After having lost eighty pounds in thiry days, John L. slowly began to recover. By his thirtieth birthday, October 15, 1888, he was able to get about on crutches. On December 7, 1888, John L. Sullivan posted $5,000 and on January 7, 1889, articles of agreement were signed for Sullivan and Kilrain to meet for $10,000 a side, and the Police Gazette Belt. Sullivan said he would give the belt to some newsboy in Boston. So, the battle was drawn for what would be the last bare knuckle prize fight under the rules of the London Prize Ring for the heavy weight championship.

The colours of Jake Kilrain were produced by the Police Gazette in promotion of their Champion. The silk fabric measures 33 x 33 in. and is adorned in the center by the figure of Kilrain with arms folded. One corner contains the seal of the State of Maryland (Kilrain was from Baltimore), the other corner the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (home to Sullivan) and in the other corners an American shield and the Irish harp symbol. Condition: Fair. Some running of colors, several small holes, staining confined mainly to the border area which would matt out. Wrinkles should disappear when mounted.
