Joe Louis

vs.

John Henry Lewis

John Henry Lewis, suffering from the loss of peripheral vision in his left eye, had voluntarily relinquished his ligh heavyweight title. In what was to be the first heavyweight championship fight between two black men, Lewis was looking to his old friend Joe Louis for a start to his post-fight career.

"I was not happy about that fight, but I knew John Henry was on his way out and at least he'd had the glory of a fight with the heavyweight champion and made a good dollar." (1)

-Joe Louis

After three knockdowns at 2:29 of round one, the referee, Arthur Donovan stepped in and halting the count at five declared the fight over.

"I',m bigger, heavier and hit harder. Why shouldn't I have knocked him out?" (2)
