Marty Marshall

"...As early as round two, he (Liston) had Marshall primed for ejection but refrained from applying the coup de grace in the interests of giving the crowd their money 's worth, as requested. 'I was told to take it for a coupla rounds. Marshall's a clown-they told me-who'd bounce around and flick punches from all sides. I standing there, kinda wondering, when all of a sudden he lets out a yell and, with my mouth wide open, gaping, he slugged me right on the jaw. It didn't hurt, but I couldn't close my mouth. I had to fight the last six rounds with my mouth open. After a while, it hurt real bad.' The jaw, in fact, was broken. Marshall, who subsequently became a stock-checker for a paint company, was offened by Sonny's account:'(It was) a right cross. It's not true that I jumped in the air and whooped and that we were laughing it up all through the fight'"(1)
