Sugar Ray Robinson

vs.

Carmen Basilio

23 September 1957

Yankee Stadium

The fourth middleweight reign of Robinson came to an end before a gathering of about 35,000, far short of predictions, in as sensational a fight as ever seen in New York...

Ray's Sunday punch carried the same sting as when he was in his heyday but this time it crashed against the iron jaw of the man with the ridgy eyebrows from Chittenango, New York, a fighter with a heart of steel.

The affair was a throwback to the days when ringmen fought their hearts out to gain their objective and because of that, it will take its place among ring classics. Never in all the years I've seen Ray in action, did he receive the punishment meted out to him by his conqueror. He knew every momenet that he was in a battle. Though he failed to retain his crown he gave all he had, fought to the last drop, came out of tight squeezes from which it seemed only a miracle could save him. He thought he won and was emphatic in his after-fight interview in letting the world know his thoughts. But I think the decision was a fair one.

-Nat Fleischer. The Ring. November, 1957

Basilio won on a split decision. Al Berl, referee, scored 9 to 6 in favor of Robinson, Judge Artie Aidala scored 9 to 5 and 1 even for Basilio and Judge Bill Recht scored 8 to 6 and I even for Basilio.

These two men were not finished with each other yet...
