The much anticipated bout for the welterweight chmpionship between Sugar Ray and Kid Gavilan would be Robinson's last defense of his Welterweight title. Coming in at the limit of 147 pounds Robinson had struggled to make the weight and would never again fight at this weight.
The bout attended by some 2,000 Cuban fans, including Kid Chocolate, was exciting from start to finish. Even after his diet regime Robinson proved too strong for Gavilan and won a fifteen round decision.
