1938

The year of 1938 was completed with a bang in Chicago when James C. Mullen, pioneer promoter in the Middle West, came out of retirement to present Windy Cityans with a boxing program studded with names of good pugilists. The Coliseum, the boxing rendevous where ventures, was crowded with fight fans. Leo Rodak, recognized by the N.B.A. as the featherweight champion, and Leone Efrati, Italian-Jewish importation of Emil Nanny's, put up a spectacular battle in the feature with Rodak winning a hectic mill. Rodak was hard pressed in the last three rounds. When the 10th and final gong sounded, Efrati was still in there pitching. He received a mighty ovation.

In the semi-windup 10 rounds, Frankie (Kid) Covelli, Brooklyn Italian windmiller, surprized Al Mancini, recent conqueror of world's bantamweight champion Sixto Escobar, with a great victory over the Washington boy. In another exciting bout, Al Roth of New York and Billy Marquart, Canadian lightweight champion, went at it hammer and tongs. In the fifth heat, Marquart received a vicious battering about the eyes and the bout had to be stopped.
