Mi Vida Loca
Tapia
v.
Romero
With boxing at a low as low as anyone could recall ,the Johnny Tapia-Danny Romero decade old feud turned big-time prize fight offered either salvation or damntion for the sport. Coming after such spectacles as Oliver McCall's emotional collapse in the ring, and the Holyfield-Tyson II disaster, with the subsequent near riots, Las Vegas and all of boxing braced itself.
Tapia and Romero grew up in the same neighborhood, at one time Romero's father trained Johnny Tapia, but their lives were never the same. Tapia, his mother raped and murdered when he was eight years old never knew his father, he died before Johnny was born, was banned for three years from boxing for cocaine use. Romero grew up in a loving home and had the good looks to be a superstar. These two neighborhood friends had taken different paths to the same destination and along the way had become bitter rivals.
At the Thomas and Mack Center 130 Las Vegas Metro police officers and 50 members of Caesars Palace security, along with three specially trained gang-observation units were making there presence known. But all the fighting this night was in the ring.
After 12 hard fought rounds, Johnny Tapia ala Ike O'Neil Weir turned his trademark back-flip. As well, he should have, Tapia won on all three cards a unanimous decision. A great fight, and a great night for boxing. (1)
