
Jock McAvoy

Handsome and loyal outside the rope and ferocious inside the ropes, Joseph Bamford, began fighting in 1927 to help supplement his family's income. So as to keep his profession from his widowed mother he fought as Jock McAvoy. By 1933, the hard hitting McAvoy had unseated British legend Len Harvey as British Middleweight Champion. Within a year he would knock out the reigning World Middleweight Champion Babe Risko in a non-title overweight match.
Never more than a middleweight, McAvoy fought John Henry Lewis for the World Light Heavyweight Championship and Jack Petersen for the British Heavyweight Title, losing to both by decisions. He would eventually win the British Light Heavyweight Title.
After 18 years, 147 fights, with only 14 loses Jock McAvoy retired in 1945. After a life spent standing on his own two feet and slugging it out ,Jock McAvoy succumbed to the ulitmate knockdown. In 1951 he was stricken with polio and was wheelchair bound the remainder of his life. He died on his birthday, November 20, at the age of 63 years.
