Holyfield
Finally
After six years, a prison term, divorce, ring defeats, courtroom defeats, finally... Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in the same ring at the same time, but no one thought the same men as in 1990, when the fight had been originally scheduled. Tyson his remarkable skills eroding by the visages of time and inactivity. Holyfield seemingly the victim of one too many wars. In spite of all the years had taken from them the two men that showed up that November night brought with them a tremendous ability to take a punch and an unwillingness to quit. As events developed time had been kinder to Holyfield than Tyson and as the rounds wore on the accumulating effect of the punches was battering the formerly invincible champion. With round six came only the second knockdown in Mike Tyson's career. He was not the same afterward.
Nearing the end of ten round , Holyfield drove a weary Tyson ever backward in a hail of punches saved only by the bell ,Tyson staggered to his corner. The corner or the referee could have chosen to stop the fight at that point, but when the bell ran sounding the beginning of round eleven Michael Gerard Tyson rose wearily and came forth a man resigned to face his fate. The end came quickly; a volley of some 15 unanswered punches and referee Mitch Halpern stepped between the men and stopped the fight.
At the post-fight press conference ,a battered Mike Tyson reached out to Evander Holyfied saying, " I just want to shake your hand. It's been so long. I just want to touch you. I thank you very much. I have the greatest respect for you."
