The very essence of persistance, Jersey Joe Walcott first fought for the heavyweight championship in December, 1947, losing a controversial decision to an aging Joe Louis. Over the next four years, Walcott fought a re-match with Louis losing via 11th round knockout, lost two decisions to then- champion Ezzard Charles then, finally ,July 18, 1951, at the age of thirty-seven, Jersey Joe knocked out Ezzard Charles to become Champion of the World.
