"Where can I find your manager?"
"You can't find my manager, because I don't have one."
"Kid you got one now, I'm your manager."(1)
-Jack Bulger to Mickey Walker
"Bulger had a lot of class. He was a smart-looking guy, loved to gamble and considered himself quite a ladies' man but he was a honest Abe Lincoln. Bulger loved the bright lights of Broadway and could get rid of money as quickly as any of the so-called free spenders, but I never saw him take a drink. It was he who introduced me to Broadway and the night life." (2)
-Mickey Walker
"...Bulger and I were sitting at a table in Lindy's Returarant on Broadway when the waiter leaned over and whispered that Arnold Rothstein wanted to talk to me.
"Okay send him over, " I said.
"Look kid, he said quietly, "you're a great little fighter and you're going places. You're going to make a lot of money. But you can make more if you team up with me. All I want you to do is to take it easy once in a while...
"I was getting ready to hit him with a left hook when his skinny pal pulled a gun from inside his coat...I was getting set to let that fancy-dressing little punk have it, too when Bulger jumped up, grabbed my arm and got between us."
"Rothstein didn't even get up out of his chair. He just kept smiling. "Put it away, Legs," he ordered.
"After they left, Bulger asked me if I knew who the skinny guy was. I shook my head."
"That's Rothstein's bodyguard, Legs Diamond...You're lucky the trigger-happy son-of-a-bitch didn't shoot you down right here.' (3)
" On the afternoon of the fight, I got a telephone call from Newark. Jack was in the hospital. He was seriously ill, his appendix had burst."
I was sitting by the bed..."Mick", he croaked, "always be on the level. That's the only way. Don't pay attention to the con guys. They'll always get you in trouble.
"Don't dissipate. God has given you a wonderful body. Don't mistreat it. If you take care of yourself, your future is assured. Some day you'll get the chance to be the heavyweight champion of the world. Don't let yourself down. Don' t let me down."
"Those were Jack Bulger's dying words."(4)
