Congratulations For Taking Home The Bacon...
Suffering humanity owes a debt of gratitude to Jess Willard for giving a large number of the world's greatest loser pickers a chance finally to land on a winner.
...The great white race never felt better in it's whole life and it is finding some diverson by pushing the races which are not quite so white off the sidewalks of Havana, Cuba.
-Damon Runyon. Key West, Fla. April 6, 1915
As it would seem all of the white race rejoiced, trouble was brewing in the Willard camp...
The big fight is over and the white race is some race, boys. It was reported that there was some dissension among the syndicators of Willard over question of the proprietorship of big Jess. The men who put up the money for the big fight and Jack Curley, who was the truck horse of the occasion, are said to have been laboring under the delusion that they had an interest in Willard's subsequent efforts, while Tom Jones, manager of the Kansan, is alleged to have taken the ground that the syndicate is concerned only with the pictures and has nothing whatever to do with Willard himself.
...If the promoters didn't know just where they stood in the premises it was their own fault, for they cannot say they did not know, T. Jones, whose generosity is proverbial in the sporting world.
Within 26 months Jess Willard would fire Tom Jones as his manager, but for now all the world hailed the conqueroring hero, all the white world, that is.
