In January, 1927 George L. Tex Rickard and Jacob Ruppert, President of American League Baseball Club of New York signed a lease to Rickard for the exclusive use of Yankee Stadium
"for the conduct of wrestling, sparring and boxing matches and exhbitions..."
Jacob Ruppert and the American League Baseball Club of New York to receive ten per cent of the gross receipts, effectively making Jacob Ruppert and Tex Rickard partners.
Rickard's eye was toward bringing the Dempsey Tunney re-match to New York, if enough pressure could be applied to the commission to grant a license and raise the ticket ceiling price.
Ultimately, Rickard was to stage the Dempsey Sharkey fight under this lease , but the big fight went to Chicago, much to the chagrin of Jacob Ruppert and the New York Athletic Commission, who in a letter from Chariman Muldoon to Rickard he stated, "permission for the Dempsey-Sharkey fight at the Stadium had been granted on the condition that the big fight would be helf here."
Rickard was hold his last major promotion the Tunney v. Heeney fight at Yankee Stadium, it lost money.
